Deciduous Trees in Oregon

What are deciduous trees?

Deciduous trees lose their leaves for part of the year in order to preserve energy and resources. Here in Oregon, our deciduous trees lose their leaves in the fall to prepare for the cold and lack of sun in winter, but in tropical parts of the world, deciduous trees lose their leaves during the hot/dry season to protect against moisture loss. The majority of deciduous trees are flowering plants, but there are a few conifers that lose their leaves, including the western larch!

What are some examples of deciduous trees?

Here in Oregon, some examples of native deciduous trees include maple, oak, alder, cottonwood, aspen, ash, willow, hazelnut, dogwood, cascara, crabapple, wild cherry, madrone, black hawthorn, and myrtle.
